This well-maintained hiking trail sets off from just below the “Alpengasthof” restaurant towards Lake Hinterburg. With pushchairs the going is rather tough, as there are several steep sections to overcome. The path is also punctuated by a number of stiles, which have been installed by cattle farmers. After hiking through the varied alpine landscape for approximately 1 hour, you reach the idyllic Hinterburgseeli. The path currently has over 90 human and animal figures to discover, all carved by different woodcarvers.

The idea - the path to Lake Hinterburg

The avalanches during the winter of 1998/99 and Storm Lothar caused untold damage to the area around Lake Hinterberg and along the path to Axalp. It was a tumult of toppled trees, branches and stones. Then we came up with the idea of carving the broken tree trunks into sculptures. Very soon, our project inspired other woodcarvers from Brienz too. Under our own initiative, we got to work. After clearing away lots of debris and the strenuous task of getting the tree trunks into position, the path was opened to visitors in summer 1999. Over the years, over 80 figures have been made to date. In 2011, a more accessible path was added to the existing trail. Come and pay a visit our figures in the wonderful natural setting of the Bernese Oberland! The Woodcarving Team.
