Suldtal – a wild gem

This hike consists of a more strenuous and an easier section: the circular hike to the Pochtenfall and the return route through the Suldtal to Aeschiried. At weekends, up until the end of September, the PostBus goes from Aeschiried to Suld. However, the Suldtal is also worth visiting in autumn, as despite the paving, this stretch is just as beautiful on foot (add on an extra 1 hour 15 minutes).

To see the thundering water as it cascades down the 80-metre rock face, you must follow a steep circular trail from Suld. Surefootedness and dry weather are an advantage. In around 20 minutes, you will reach a beautiful observation point overlooking the waterfall. After that, the path becomes steeper still, climbing quite some distance before heading over the sparkling stream at the top of the Pochtenfall and then down the other side.

From Suld it’s best to keep to the left side of the Suldbach river at first. The start of this well-maintained path passes through woodland and glades; it then winds down through the Suldtal along the bank of the river. After one-and-a-half kilometres, a bridge takes you to the right riverbank. A little further along, at the edge of the trail, you will come to a beautiful picnic and barbecue area. Soon you reach a fork in the trail. The top fork is easy and takes you straight back to Aeschiried. The recommended route, which is wilder and slightly longer, continues along the course of the river. After a while, the path switches to the other bank, where it runs along and away from the river, sometimes along one of Suld’s rickety wooden walkways. Along the narrow trail a little surefootedness is again required. Round about Stächgrabe, a narrow bridge leads to the other bank and up through the thick woodland. Soon you’ll be back in the sunny meadows around Aeschiried and before long, the PostBus stop.
